Frequently asked questions

What benefits does Integrative Craniosacral Therapy provide?

The possibilities are unusual and endless. A comprehensive list is an illusion as there are benefits achievable beyond our conscious comprehension.

Here are a few examples of benefits: arthritis, chronic pain syndromes, headache syndromes, migraines, pain syndromes, spinal dysfunctions, disc compression, temporomandibular joint syndrome, traumatic injuries, degenerative diseases of the central nervous system, cerebrovascular issues, postoperative rehabilitation, brain dysfunctions, autism, cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, motor system problems, vertigo, endocrine disorders, mental disorders, emotional disorders, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, spiritual crisis, sleep disorders and everything in between. Craniosacral is safe for infants, children, young adults, adults, and seniors.

“In a future age, some version of craniosacral therapy may lead to the much-sought transmutative, alchemical, telekinetic science, bridging the imaginary gap between mind and body, energy and matter. That such a discovery will hearken back to the oldest Stone Age modes of touch, manipulation, voodoo, and totemic conversion will be entirely appropriate. Post-materialistic magic may regain the vitality of prescientific magic, with the additional cogency of having passed through the heart of matter, the atomic nucleus- the very birth and death of the universe- and come out the other side.” ~Dr. Upledger

What is a typical session like?

Firstly, there is no typical session. Each one is unique based on what the Client presents with in that given moment. Here is a session layout example:

  1. Dialogue on presenting issues before and throughout session
  2. Practitioner sets fulcrums, holds space, honors innate intelligence of the client, tunes-into systems, negotiates boundaries in energy field off the body
  3. Listens to the 3 main tides: Craniorhythmic Impulse, Midtide and Longtide
  4. Listens to the craniosacral system with hands on the body
  5. Performs craniosacral protocol based on body's inherent treatment plan
  6. Addresses vector alignment
  7. Finds point of balanced tension including *stillpoints and unwinding that unfolds
  8. Creates and establishes resolutions with client's presenting wisdom
  9. Listens to craniorhythm out in the field again to notice changes
  10. Assigns relevant client homework
  11. Disconnects from client's process and returns exchanged energy back to client

During session work it is common for a variety of bodily functions to occur demonstrating the processing of energy such as laughing, crying, limb and extremity movement in any direction, localized or full body trembling or shaking, sensations of energy movement through various regions and directions in and around your body, a sense of pulsation and or energetic wave-like movement, denseness or tightness in areas of restriction, stomach gurgling, belching, passing gas, sensations of hot or cold, memory recall, visuals of color, smells, dream like visions, past life recall, a feeling of flotation, sense of timelessness, weightlessness, sense of well-being, receiving valuable messages from outside yourself, and being in a state between awake and asleep. Note that each client responds differently each session and all these responses are healthy and normal. The practitioner will be there to support and guide you through whatever process comes forward to be received in the moment.

*Stillpoint Definition: Within these tides there are processes in sessions called stillpoints and levels within those still points that is a deepening of stillness that allows the client's system to access, resource and liberate potency and return essence to their system. Stillpoints can be long or short deepening on the client's process, they may feel a drifting down a perceptual spectrum that can be physical, emotional, psychospiritual and can bring about the sense that the personal self separates and the duality of mind-body-spirit meld into unity of consciousness.

How many sessions do you recommend?

I recommend 3 sessions to feel if this type of therapy resonates with you and your desired intentions. Someone rehabilitating from surgery would benefit from weekly sessions during their recovery process typically 8-10 sessions. A weekly or bi-weekly recommendation goes for those dealing with acute or chronic physical, emotional, mental or spiritual traumas. Monthly maintenance sessions are very beneficial for continued support and growth following a series. If you feel you need a quick tune-up in your life, single sessions are beneficial.

What to wear during a session?

In Integrative Craniosacral Therapy, Clients are fully clothed on the table. Shoes, belts and jewerly are removed for comfort. It is advised to wear loose or fitted clothing that moves and breathes freely such as shorts, leggings, yoga pants and similar material for tanks or tops. The idea is non-restriction, so please no jeans, dresses or skirts. If massage is added to your session, you may disrobe to your comfort level and you will be fully draped with blankets and sheets. If a client is more comfortable in swimwear or bra and underwear, that is an option. For all genders, breasts and gentials must be covered at all times and cannot be exposed during a session per CA draping laws.

What are contraindications for Integrative Craniosacral Therapy?

With the gentle nature of Integrative Cranial Sacral Therapy, there are very few contraindications. Contraindications are acute intracranial hemorrhage, intracranial aneurysm, recent skull fracture, herniation of the medulla oblongata, consult with your physician if you have any intracranial conditions that are sensitive to changes in intracranial pressure.

How will I feel after a session?

You will know when we get there, it will be unique and related to your individual process and experience. Common feelings include relaxation, clarity, a sense of renewal, rejuvenated, restored, reconnected, a sense of balance, awareness, integrity, calm, joy, relief, a feeling of release, pain and stress relief, resiliency, sense of interconnectedness, the realization that the work continues to process following the session and begins to radiate out into your life. No matter what you feel, it will be exactly what you need.

It is important to take time in the next 2-3 days to notice how you are in the world. -Notice if anything feels different in your awareness of daily life. -Notice what is the quality of your sleep that night. -Notice how your digestion is operating. -If you feel called to record your experience, it can be done in many creative ways. Simply paying attention and noticing the lasting effects after your session(s) can give you valuable insight and validation of what this work can offer you.

What is 'Integrative' Craniosacral Therapy?

Integrative Craniosacral Therapy is multi-dimensional healing work conveyed through intuitive listening, intentional light touch and holding space which opens doorways that transcend linear time and space. It returns your vital essence from the source to restore integrity in all forms. It is effective on the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual bodies and honors their interconnectedness throughout your energy systems. It is unconventional self-healing. It is a journey you will be ready for, when you find it resonates for yourself. I am a guide on that journey, holding the universal light of support in unconditional love.

'Integrative' Craniosacral Therapy is a combination of techniques from both Traditional Craniosacral Therapy, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, the spectrum in-between, with Energy Medicine and Polarity Therapy participating as foundational principles.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) Definition: “A technique for tapping into the body’s many layers and matrices, using educated hands to sense and adjust tensions of fascia and viscera and subtle pressures of fluids, revitalizing organs and restoring underlying rhythms toward their natural states. It is also a paraphysical art using light but intentional touch to transduce mind, matter, and energy into one another. CST is a forerunner of a post-technological healing that parallels quantum physics in its capacity to weigh virtually imperceptible cellular vectors, use mindedness and breath to track and influence tissue systems and metabolic processes, and translate probabilistic and hypothetical events into real ones. At that level it is a relativistic system that entrains paradoxical, even contradictory, possibilities at the same time.” ~Richard Grossinger

Biodynamic Craniosacral Definition (BCST): “Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle profound non-invasive, hands-on treatment for the whole body. Performed on a massage table, the client is fully clothed and the touch is generally light and still. The treatment is focused on supporting the health of the whole being, especially the nervous system. This is the system that dictates all of the body’s functioning, constantly sending and receiving information. There is an energetic map that underlies one‘s basic health and symptomology. Health is never lost no matter what the ailment. The ability to identify the parts of the nervous system that are not functioning optimally and our awareness of the “always available health” in the body to assist the system in bringing itself back into balance. This supports greater ease and helps the body decrease symptoms.”

~The Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America

Polarity Therapy Definition: “This unique form of energy healing enables you to look at what you’re carrying as pain, stress and disease. It provides an opportunity to access and unwind the origins that create physical, mental and emotional symptoms. In addition to working with your body, you are supported with verbal communication and reflective listening.”

~American Polarity Therapy Association

Energy Medicine Left Brain Definition: "Conventional medicine, at its foundation, focuses on the biochemistry of cells, tissue, and organs. Energy Medicine, at its foundation, focuses on the energy fields of the body that organize and control the growth and repair of cells, tissue, and organs. Changing impaired energy patterns may be the most efficient, least invasive way to improve the vitality of organs, cells, and psyche." ~David Feinstein, Ph.D.

Energy Medicine Right Brain Definition: "Energy is your body's magic! It is your life force. You keep it healthy and it keeps you healthy. If you are sick or sad, shifting your energies feels good. When you care for these invisible energies, it makes your heart sing and your cells happy!" ~Donna Eden

*Dis-order= A non-permanent temporary state; seeking harmony and alignment

How did you get into the Health and Wellness field?

In all my life, the greatest resource I have found is perspective. The way I view traditional Western healthcare and even alternative healthcare, has shifted significantly. Years ago, after having multiple surgeries and living with chronic pain, depression and anxiety, I finally found a new way to fully restore my health. In what felt like a hopeless situation, I was alive yet failing to thrive with my traditional approaches. I could only get so far and it wasn’t far enough. I knew there was another way.

I began to seek alternatives elsewhere, even moving to another state to acquires new resources. I was online searching for ‘my person’, you know the one that could ‘fix everything’. I found the warmest smile in a practitioner’s profile picture. His work didn’t make sense to me at first glance. However, the pull and the mysterious allure was too strong not to at least try it. I had spent so much money on healthcare already, why not this time. I made the appointment with a Craniosacral Therapist, hoping something good might happen, yet secretly believing that it probably wouldn’t. I was never happier in my life to be wrong.

My Craniosacral experience went from woo to whoa. After a series of sessions, the trajectory of my life completely shifted. Resolutions of disruption in my system were occurring. Energetic releases in my mental, emotional, physical and spiritual systems were reconnecting me back to me. It felt like my DNA had been reprogrammed and rebooted. With all of me now available, my health returned. That person I was looking for to ‘fix everything’, turns out that person is me! My therapist knew self-healing is true for all, he held the light for me in a time I needed help to see the way home.

It was a game changer, a life saver. Now living a life to savor, I was called to become an Integrative Craniosacral Practitioner to hold this sacred healing space for others.
